VIAGRA THE SIDE-EFFECT NO ONE TOLD ABOUT?

Ten years since its launch, there seems no end to Viagra's success. The male sex drug has become one of the world's best known brand names and has restored sexual function to an estimated 27million men worldwide.

The number of users continues to increase by the week, in the process making Pfizer, its manufacturer, untold millions.

Viagra has changed the lives of millions of men - but at what cost to women?

So far, however, there is no equivalent wonder pill for women, and whether Viagra use has caused equal delight among the often middle-aged female partners of the men taking it is another matter.

Indeed, many of them are battling with the mood swings and low libido induced by menopause, just as their husbands are experiencing sexual rejuvenation.

Have women been forgotten?

Doctors agree that a healthy sex life is important to the well-being of most people, and anything they can do to assist that is valuable. The problem, it seems, is that women have been left out of the equation - as Miranda Hopkins unhappily discovered.

The greater problem is that in many cases, just as the older man's sex drive is being rejuvenated by Viagra, his wife is experiencing the menopause, with its negative effect on libido.

Studies of the social effects of treating sexual dysfunction in older couples have revealed a regular complaint that male doctors are often only too happy to treat male patients on their own, without making any inquiries about the state of a man's relationship with his wife or partner.

Female sexual dysfunction has received similar scrutiny as the drugs industry relentlessly searches for new conditions open to a medical label. But so far, efforts to treat women have not been successful.

'Fixing a man's sexual function while doing nothing for the woman is not helpful. We know that half of the men who get Viagra from their doctors never go back for a repeat prescription - not because it doesn't work, but because their partners don't like it.'

So while we know that a healthy sex life is important for both genders, interest in helping women is lagging way behind the interest in helping men.

'That might all change when there is more hope of offering women effective treatment, but it is not happening yet.'

COCA-COLA TO PHASE OUT CONTROVERSIAL CHEMICAL

Soft drink giant Coca-Cola is phasing out a controversial additive that has been linked to hyperactivity and causing damage to DNA.

The chemical Sodium Benzoate, also known as E211, is used to stop fizzy drinks going mouldy.

But recent research has shown that the chemical can deactivate parts of DNA, the genetic code in the cells of living creatures.

Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology research at Sheffield University found that the additive could switch off vital parts of DNA that could be linked to cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's disease.

He has also called for further research into the chemical.

In combination with vitamin C (CORR) sodium benzoate can form a potentially cancer-causing substance, benzene.

The move will mean that by the end of the year no can will contain E211 - and it plans to remove it from its other products as soon as possible.

Coca-Cola said it had begun removing sodium benzoate from Diet Coke production in January.

A company spokesperson said: 'We are continuously looking at emerging trends and listening to our consumers thoughts about ingredients.

The company stressed that E211 was an approved additive by many worldwide bodies including the European Food Standards Agency

WOMEN COFFEE DRINKERS WILL LIVE LONGER?

A US research published today in the Annals of Internal Medicine, that women who drink two to three cups of coffee a day can reduce heart disease by as much as 25%!

And the strange thing the study found was it only helps women and not men?.

The researchers are at a lost to explain why coffee appeared to have no effect on the death rates of men.

The study contradicted fears that coffee is bad for the health. Drinking as much as six cups a day did not raise the risk of premature death in either sex.

Those who drank decaffeinated coffee also had lower death rates than those who abstained.

The scientists were unsure whether the coffee itself was cutting the risk of dying prematurely - or whether something else in the lifestyle of female coffee drinkers protects them.

'The possibility of a modest benefit of coffee consumption on heart disease, cancer, and other causes of death needs to be further investigated.'

Coffee contains antioxidants and tannins which are good for the heart and arteries. Past studies have suggested it can also be good for the liver and help reduce the risk of asthma attacks. .

HANDPHONE AND CANCER RISK

Report from Time.com

(PITTSBURGH) — The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.

The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science and he believes people should take action now — especially when it comes to children.

"Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later," Herberman said.

PLAY IT SAFE:

Since the handphone went from luxury to necessary, much debate has been going on about this topic. Does the electromagnetic radiation from the handset cause cancer. To be sure, nobody really knows. It just like coffee. Some say its good ,while some say its bad.

We as layman sometimes are at a lost who to believe.

My advice is moderation , yes everything done in moderation may be the answer.

Just like what the doctor says: being safe rather than sorry later is the best bet.

I for one, always use my speaker phone rather then put the phone to my ear. Or if you have a wireless thingy, that will also be good. Why stir the unknown. And if you have very young children try not to allow them to use the phone too often, as their brains are still developing and the radiation from the handphone may actually harm them…
